Build a Drop Leaf Table with Kelly Mehler

PREPARATIONS & WOOD

The suggested size of the drop leaf table is approximately 29" tall, about 36" wide and 36" to 48" long including the 2 leaves. We wil use this drawing as a base- the drawer is optional. As in most plans the dimensions of the piece and the parts will be approximate. We will build the table to suit your needs and materials. Last year we did a table of this size and one that was 48" long. For the legs we will do tapered legs in class unless you have turning experience or can turn them at home - it is a simple turning and we have the tools if that is your choice - let me know.

Including waste, the table requires about 30 board feet of 4/4 material and about six board feet of 8/4 for the four legs. You should bring your own wood pre-milled - cut close to final dimensions and the larger panels glued up. If you prefer, we can provide a wood kit for pre-order in the typical woods - cherry, walnut, maple and oak. Kits are $375-$475 including hardware- depending on species and table size. Please let me know before June or sooner, if you want to order a kit.

Before choosing your wood, it is very helpful to look at the drawing or a sketch of your table. There is no need to worry about the construction details; we work those out in class. From the drawing, make up a parts list with names and approximate dimensions. When choosing wood, look for wood that is suitable for the parts of your project rather than focusing on the quantity of wood.

TOOLS TO BRING:

* Dovetail saw
* Cutting gauge...cuts across the grain (A "wheel" [disc] marking gauge works best.)
* Dovetail marking gauge (Veritas saddle from Lee Valley are good) or sliding bevel
* 2 in. to 3 in. steel square (adjustable is nice)
* 6" rule
* 12" Combination Square - a 6" is also handy to have
* Tape measure (shorter is better)
* Dead blow hammer (14+ oz.) - Not a rubber mallet
* Sharp bevel edge chisel set - you can bring your sharpening stones but we have a set here
* Pencils and paper or note pad (a digital camera is a plus)
* One or more handplanes (a block, jack, smooth and shoulder are desirable)
* Any other hand tools that you would typically use in your shop
* Safety equipment: safety glasses, dust mask, hearing protection
